Programme Entry Requirements

Students must complete the Bahrain Polytechnic Selection Test and achieve the required English and Maths levels. To meet the English level, students may also submit a completed IELTS with no band less than 4.0, or equivalent.

Introduction & Programme Aims

The Foundation Programme prepares students for degree study. The Foundation Programme offers a flexible, innovative programme designed to meet students’ goals and learning needs. Students are placed in courses according to their academic requirements which will further develop numeracy and literacy, personal growth, and technical skills. Students will also become familiar with the Polytechnic environment and requirements of study at degree level.

The Programme plans to meet the individual learning needs of students in a supportive environment that enhances the development of confidence, and the ability to make informed decisions related to ongoing study options.

The Programme aims to raise students’ awareness of Bahrain’s labour market and to develop their future employability skills.

The Programme is flexible and designed to meet individual learning needs. Students are assessed and placed according to their level in English and Maths. The Foundation Programme has the following components of learning assessed in the following courses:

  • English
  • Mathematics

In addition to preparatory courses for external assessments in English and Maths, a range of access courses related to individual degree paths may be available. Students will also have an opportunity to explore career options in conjunction with the degree programmes and industry representatives.

General Electives

The Electives Programme provides students with the opportunity to study subjects that are not directly related to their degree programme, but serve to further enhance their employability skills and widen their academic interests. There are a range of courses available for students to choose from.
The National Requirement courses are also offered to students. These comprise of:

  • Introduction to Human Rights
  • Arabic Language
  • Modern Economic History of Bahrain

Students are required to take a specific number of credits from this programme before they are eligible for graduation.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of this programme will have the academic study skills and knowledge to be able to:

  • Apply essential knowledge and academic study skills.
  • Use written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrate basic maths skills.
  • Demonstrate their employability skills.

Career Opportunities

The Certificate in Academic Preparation Programme does not lead directly to a career but prepares students to succeed at a higher level of study. The Programme has a strong focus on academic literacy and includes academic advising. It also offers career development which will enable students to make informed study and career choices.

Teaching and Assessment

The Programme has a strong student-centred approach. A range of learning and teaching activities are used, such as tutorials and workshops, skills development, problem-based learning, research, mini-projects, presentations, team work and reflections.

Employability skills: communication, teamwork, problem solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, self-management, learning and technology are addressed throughout the Programme.

Students are assessed in a variety of ways including skills testing, individual and group presentations and assignments.

Qualifications

No qualification is awarded, but completion of both English 2 and Math 2 qualifies students for entry into degree.
